Job Description:

PhD Position in methodological MRI of metabolic dysfunction

The Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for one PhD position in methodological developments for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS). The main aim is the development of novel pulse sequences and image reconstruction methods for fat MRI and MRS, with applications targeting metabolic dysfunction in cancer-induced cachexia. The position will specifically focus on the development of techniques for water-fat imaging and MR spectroscopy of ectopic fat and adipose tissue depots. The position is funded by a grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the Collaborative Research Centre SFB 824 Imaging for Selection, Monitoring and Individualization of Cancer Therapies (http://www.sfb824.de/en/).

The Radiology Department is equipped with four MRI scanners, including two whole-body 3 T Ingenia Philips MRI systems, one of which is dedicated for research. The student will be part of the Body Magnetic Resonance Research Group in the Radiology Department (http://www.bmrrgroup.de/) and will be closely working with clinicians within the TUM University Hospital (Klinikum rechts der Isar) and industry partners (Philips Healthcare). The funding for position is intended for the entire duration of the PhD (3 years) and the position is available immediately.

Applicants should hold a Masters (diploma) degree in Physics, Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or in an area related to Medical Imaging. A solid background in signal processing, excellent programming skills in C/C++ and MATLAB/IDL and previous experience with data acquisition and analysis are required. The applicant should have good communication skills and be willing to work as a part of an interdisciplinary team of engineers, physicists, and clinicians.

Applications should include (in a single pdf): a cover letter, a curriculum vita, if applicable a list of publications, Bachelor and Master (or diploma) transcripts (including a detailed list of classes and grades obtained) and two references (contact details only).

All materials should be sent before July 31st 2017 electronically to:
